Frequently Asked Questions

Admissions

I don't know what I want to do after school, is that okay?

Yes, most students come to school without knowing exactly what they want to do. The admissions committee doesn't expect you to have a perfect plan.

Can I submit more than one Org Chart?

Yes, if your current position is more of a staff type role and doesn't showcase some of the leadership responsibilities you've had in the way of direct reports, you can submit an org chart from a previous position in which you had more direct reports. Two levels up the chain of command is sufficient.

What should I put in my video introduction?

Be yourself! Don't feel like it's an audition, it is genuinely a way for admissions to get to meet the person behind the application.

I have a low GRE/GMAT score, should I still apply?

Yes, test scores aren't everything and the admissions committee cares about who you are as an individual and how you will make positive contributions to the community.

How do I prepare for my interview?

The MIT Sloan interview is a behavior style interview that is conducted with an admissions officer. They will want to hear about your experience leading teams, tackling problems, and overcoming obstacles to accomplish the mission. Think about 5-10 short stories that really highlight your work and leadership experience that you would be comfortable sharing in an interview. Veterans bring a unique perspective to the MBA classroom and you want to highlight that experience.

What do most veterans pursue coming out of MIT Sloan?

Sloan vets explore a multitude of industries from consulting to banking to entrepreneurship. There is no one path and you will have the resources to explore your passion.

Where can I turn to for help with my application?

Contact us! Send us an email and we're happy to pair you with someone who can help. There are also some awesome (free!!) organizations that help servicemembers transition to higher education. Check them out!

Sloan Life

What type of events does the Sloan Veterans Club hold?

Every October, we help conduct a Go Ruck event during the Sloan Innovation Period. In January, we teach a seminar on military leadership lessons that is offered to the Sloan community for course credit. We also hold an "Ask me Anything" Q&A where classmates can ask questions about our experience as veterans. Additionally we lead an annual Boston pub crawl on Veteran's Day as well as other social events and club meetings throughout the year.

I have a family, are there affordable housing options in the area?

Yes, there are on-campus options for graduate students with families. However, many veterans with families choose to live off campus and have found affordable options. Typically, the further out from campus, the cheaper. It is not necessary to live in the Beacon Hill, Kendall, and Central neighborhoods as there are many convenient options for commuting to school.

Feel free to reach out to the club for detailed questions (like daycare options) as many veterans have navigated this transition with a family.

Questions about the GI Bill and coordinating with MIT.

The GI Bill coordination goes through the Student Financial Services VA Rep - Jeffery Foreman. If you follow-up regularly with both him and your approving region, its easy to ensure you get all the benefits you're entitled to. He'll send out surveys for certification approximatley every quarter.

Just know that if you qualify for 100% GI Bill but are still active duty when the term begins (due to terminal leave, etc.) the yellow ribbon program does not count for that term.
