Mission and Background:

Mission:

The mission of MIT CIPHER is to create a space where MIT employees can come together to share insights and resources, focusing on advancing and fostering a sense of belonging for historically marginalized communities.

Background:

The MIT CIPHER was born out of the need to create spaces of dialogue and community during the Covid-19 pandemic and the social/racial justice movements that started in 20201. The CIPHER, an acronym for Community of Intersectional People Helping (others) Elevate and Resonate was a collection of MIT staff that met monthly, or as needed, to make sense of their racialized and gendered experiences within MIT, the Greater Boston area, and beyond. The group regularly met for over a year using the knowledge and experiences of its members, academic scholarship, and relevant cultural artifacts to ground the group's conversations.

The word “cipher” (also spelled cypher) has deep hip-hop roots as a cipher refers to the gathering of hip-hop artists who take turns freestyling or reciting improvised raps/rhymes over a musical beat. Ciphers are special in that they invite participation among all members of the cipher. The convening of folks within a cipher can only occur when there is respect for the other individuals in the cipher. And it is a place/time/event where participants can speak freely about their experiences. This served as an effective framework for MIT’s continued pursuit of creating spaces where people can have meaningful conversations across differences in environments that will call for us to be our best in an environment that values psychological safety.
