Sloan for Inclusion Newsletter
Hi everyone,
We hope you are keeping well in the lead-up to the Thanksgiving break! The semester sure has flown by – we hope that this break is restful and safe, however you and your loved ones are celebrating, and that you all get a chance to re-charge ahead of the final few weeks of a big year. As always, if you have anything else you'd like to see included in the newsletter, or happen to come across an interesting article worth sharing, send us an email at: sloanforinclusion@mit.edu.
Sincerely,
Sloan for Inclusion Team
DE&I Mini-Challenge
In each newsletter, we’ll share a small, actionable challenge to encourage you to reflect, learn, and grow your understanding of DE&I.
WHAT? Whether you’re in the thick of recruiting, or already have plans in place, take some time to research the DEI policies and practices of your target companies. You can ask these questions in your next coffee chat, look for public DEI statements, or look at the composition of their executive leadership. You can even look to awards such as the Diversity Best Practices Inclusion Index or DiversityInc. If you find that your dream company doesn’t have the practices you’re looking for in place, don’t despair – consider what opportunities there are for you to take on DEI initiatives.
WHY? For starters, we are all looking for inclusive environments in which we feel like we can bring our whole, best selves to work. Additionally, making these questions known to recruiters and hiring managers is a clear signal that highly-qualified job seekers (like yourselves) are prioritizing DEI when looking at company cultures and values, which in turn strengthens the business case for DEI work within an organization.
We've all heard about the importance of DEI in our teams and organizations, but what kinds of actions and initiatives are managers in big tech taking to make a real difference? Join Sloan for Inclusion and Tech Club for a discussion on DEI in Tech with panelists from Microsoft’s engineering, accounts and program management teams, who have found success by leading with DE&I at top of mind.
