New guidelines for use of scooters and other “Personal Wheels” on campus
MIT is implementing guidelines related to “Personal Wheels” (PWs), including scooters. Key messages: Don’t ride inside, don’t park in classrooms or common areas, park/store only in your residential room or personal office, charge a motorized PW only while monitoring and only if the PW is registered, UL certified, and has the manufacturer-supplied charging equipment.
Key points covered by the guidelines:
Riders should stay in bike lanes, walkers have the right of way and should stay on sidewalks; everyone should use caution, know the rules of the road, and stay safe.
Riding PWs inside any Institute building is prohibited.
PW registration is open to all PWs and required of motorized PWs, which must also be UL certified as a safety measure. Registration enables the MIT Police to help if the PW is stolen, and registered non-motorized PWs can gain access to secure bike cages on campus.
Park PWs outside (use bike racks; keep pathways clear); do not attach to railings, trees, or light posts.
A PW can be parked indoors only in a residential room or personal office. Keep egress pathways clear; no parking in common areas, hallways, labs, or classrooms. (Note that motorized PWs can be parked indoors only if they are registered and UL-certified.)
Improperly parked PWs are subject to removal.
Charging PWs is not allowed on campus with the exception of UL-certified and registered PWs. Follow fire safety procedures, including:
Only use the charging equipment sold with or designed for the PW model (the PW and all charging equipment must be UL certified)
All submissions should be directed to this survey which automatically submits your submission for review for the MFin, Student Life, SES, EMBA and SFMBA departments.
