Sloan for Inclusion Newsletter
Hi everyone,
We hope the semester has been treating you all well - we can't believe mid-terms have already come and gone! We're excited to be kicking off our Sloan for Inclusion newsletter as a way to keep you updated on events we'll be hosting, interesting reads we're finding, and lastly, small challenges around DE&I that you can test out in your daily life (see this newsletter's mini-challenge below!). If you have anything else you'd like to see included in the newsletter, or happen to come across an interesting article worth sharing, send us an email at: sloanforinclusion@mit.edu.
Sincerely,
Sloan for Inclusion Team
DE&I Mini-Challenge
In each newsletter, we’ll share a small, actionable challenge to encourage you to reflect, learn, and grow your understanding of DE&I.
WHAT? Incorporate books written by authors who look different to you into your regular reading. Not just books about racism and race theory, but also novels and memoirs that depict heroes who look different than you and moments of struggles and joy that differ from those you may experince.
WHY? Think back to the books you read and studied in school – who were the authors? From a young age, the books we read shape what we perceive to be universal experiences on love, loss, and heroism. Reading a book pulls you into an author’s point of view, immersing you into someone else’s story for hours at a time – what better way is there to develop empathy for those whose lived experiences are different to ours?
Short on time? Pick up a book of short stories instead and always have a new story to return to!
