Remembrance Day

At 11:00am on 11/11, the United Kingdom, along with much of the Commonwealth, will fall silent, just as it has every year since the armistice was signed in 1918. People will stop what they are doing, bow their heads for two minutes, and remember all those who have lost their lives fighting for their country. Red poppies, which grew in the torn up battlefields across France after The Great War, will be worn by all, symbolising post war hope and commemorating those who perished. Poppies are sold across the country by the Royal Legion, which raises money for service personnel and veterans who require help - more details can be found here.

On the Sunday closest to 11/11, Remembrance Sunday, services will be held across the UK and the immortalised words of poet Laurence Binyon will be read across the country:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Fascinating colour footage of British troops in The Great War can be seen in this recent documentary.
