Join the MIT Sloan Latin American Business Club and the Harvard Kennedy School Latin American Caucus in a chat with OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, moderated by Prof. Roberto Rigobon. Luis Almagro is currently serving as the 10th Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), and was re-elected in 2020 for a second consecutive term.

The OAS is the world's oldest regional organization (1889), and brings together all 35 independent states of the Americas. It constitutes the main political, juridical, and social governmental forum in the Hemisphere. The organization's aim is to achieve among its members an order of peace and justice, promote solidarity, collaboration, and defend their sovereignty.

Mr. Almagro has been widely recognized for his continuous fight for democracy and human rights. During his tenure as Secretary General, he has been very outspoken and involved in solving the region's crises, like the ones in Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, among others.

The topics of discussion will be:
1. Region's democratic setbacks in 2019-2020
2. Human rights violations and increase in violence
3. Response towards COVID-19 in the region: long term impacts and recovery outlook
