This session will provide historical and political context to help attendees understand the ongoing conflict in and around Gaza. Topics to be discussed include the history of the Zionist and Palestinian national movements, as well as the causes and consequences of previous wars and peace processes between Israelis, Palestinians, and their Arab state neighbors. This session will also introduce some of the initial concepts of How to Have a Constructive Conversation on Israel and Palestine, applied to these historical developments.

Peter Krause is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Boston College and a Research Affiliate with the MIT Security Studies Program. He received his PhD from MIT in Political Science and Government, and is happy to answer questions or concerns prior to the session.

Peter Krause Talk: October 7, Gaza, and the Future for Israelis and Palestinians - Part 2

Whereas the first session focused on the past, this session will focus on the present and future. What is the situation in Gaza today? Will Israel be able to achieve its aim of removing Hamas from power? How are the U.S., the U.N., and the Palestinians themselves navigating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza? What will the “day after” the war look like in Gaza—and in the broader region? How will competing efforts to recognize a Palestinian state and annex parts of the West Bank and Gaza for Israel be resolved? What role will the U.S. and Arab states play in negotiations? This session will answer these questions while introducing and applying more practices for having a constructive conversation.
