Hello Academic Support Staff
Welcome to 2025! I hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing break, because it’s time to get back into the work of course preparations. The first day of Spring term is Monday, February 3, which makes our recommended Canvas publishing deadline January 27. (IAP classes should likewise be published approximately one week before their first day.)
Use the deadlines and resources below, as well as the STS Term Start Checklist, to guide your planning, and be on the lookout for an invitation to the Preparing for Spring Town Hall. As always, we’re here to help at every stage, so don’t hesitate to reach out to us with questions or issues.
Build Canvas
If you and your teaching team have decided that the Canvas site can be copied from a previous term, fill out the Copy Course Content form. The STS deadline to copy for Spring is Tuesday, January 21. Remember to review the Gold Standards guide for recommendations and best practices as you build out your sites.
Prepare Readings
Generate a Study.Net course reader by using this request form. There is no formal deadline for this, but we recommend submitting the request by Friday, January 10. Refer to our Study.Net Guide for help building your reader. For questions about copyright and fair use, consult the MIT Libraries guidelines.
Make Arrangements
Class sessions are still being recorded automatically; refer to this FAQ to be sure you understand the default settings and whatever might be needed on your part. Submit an AV request or arrange a consultation for additional class technology needs and online support. Explore classrooms and other available spaces, and find event services, here.
Manage Student Enrollment
Class rosters are managed by various groups at MIT Sloan. Consult this breakdown of the different types of participant roles and who to contact for support by type. Refer to guidance from SES and the MIT Registrar for additional information.
Finalize TA Hiring
If your faculty has not selected a TA yet, remind them that the MIT Grad Student Union Collective Bargaining Agreement requires student appointments be set 30 days before the first day. Be sure that identified TAs have contacted Sloan Student Funding to begin the application process. Details about all the new requirements can be found on the Office of the Vice Chancellor website.
