Using Advanced Statistics to Determine Basketball Player Compatibility
Please join the EMS Club for a basketball analytics lunchtime presentation! Jen Ballen and Sam Ebb, two second-year MBAs, will be presenting their findings from a first semester independent study pursued with Professor Ben Shields. By using pairwise analysis and clustering in R, Jen and Sam sought to cluster professional basketball players into "player types" in order to identify basketball player compatibility. In doing so, the two attempted to answer the following questions: How can a line-up maximize the value of the players on the court? (Value described in this study as plus-minus performance). Are some player types more suited to play with each other? Can we quantify attributes (and include in our analysis) that have never before been quantified, such as "ego"? Find out the answers - and more - at lunch! Lunch will be provided.
