Sergio Alejandro Berni is a Senator of the province of Buenos Aires, elected for the second consecutive time in November 2015. Medical Practitioner, surgeon, lawyer and military officer, he also developed a career as public servant in high rank positions under the governments of N├®stor and Cristina Kirchner (2003-2015).
In 2009 he was elected senator of the province of Buenos Aires for the first time. Then, in December 2010, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner decided to give appoint his Secretary of Security int the newly created Ministry of National Security. He assumed the operational conduction of the four federal security and police forces, the coordination of security policies with provincial governments as well as the international cooperation. Berni continued to focus attention on social grievances as well: floods, earthquakes and fires.
In addition to addressing the urgencies of Argentina's political and natural scene, Berni lead institutional transformations to reinforce the civilian leadership over police forces, and launched an ambitious program of technological and doctrinal modernization towards a model adjusted to a modern Democratic Republic. He prioritized the development of channels of citizen participation in matters of security and attention to sensitive urban areas.
The guiding axes of these policies were the construction of citizenship and guarantee of new rights. His leading role in the region was recognized by the rest police forces of the world that elected him as Americas Delegate to the Executive Committee of the International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol (December 2014).
Having fulfilled his mandate as Secretary of Security in December of 2015, Berni resumed his legislative functions in the Senate of the Province of Buenos Aires.
